Vernonia ‘Iron Butterfly’
‘Iron Butterfly’ is a compact ironweed distinguished by its narrow, finely textured foliage and clusters of vivid purple flowers. The slender leaves give the plant a graceful, almost grass-like appearance, while the flowers provide strong late-season color and attract butterflies and other pollinators. Its upright habit works particularly well in naturalistic plantings, prairie-style gardens, perennial borders, and rain gardens. It prefers a sunny position and reasonably moist soil, although established plants can tolerate periods of drier conditions. The combination of fine foliage and intense purple flowers makes it especially effective when planted among contrasting ornamental grasses.
Height: 2–3 ft
Width: 2–3 ft
Flower time: August–September
Sun/Shade: Full sun
Deer resistant
