Penstemon ‘Blackbeard’
‘Blackbeard’ is a dramatic beardtongue valued for its dark foliage and contrasting flowers. The deep-colored leaves and stems give the plant an unusually strong presence even when it isn't blooming, while its tubular flowers provide a valuable nectar source for hummingbirds and other pollinators. Its upright form works particularly well in perennial borders, prairie-style plantings, and mixed beds where the dark foliage can contrast with plants having lighter green or silvery leaves. Like many Penstemon selections, it prefers good drainage and performs particularly well in sunny locations. Avoid consistently wet soil, especially during winter.
Height: Approximately 2–3 ft
Width: Approximately 18–24 in
Flower time: Late spring–summer
Sun/Shade: Full sun
