‘Palace Purple’ is one of the classic dark-leaved coral bells, grown primarily for its rich purple, bronze and mahogany foliage rather than its flowers. The rounded, maple-shaped leaves form a compact mound that provides strong color from spring through fall, and in favorable climates the foliage can remain evergreen. In early summer, slender flower stems rise above the mound and carry airy sprays of small creamy-white flowers. It is unusually versatile for a foliage plant, tolerating everything from shade to fairly sunny conditions, although part shade generally gives the best combination of rich foliage color and protection from leaf scorch. It works especially well along paths, in front of shrubs, in woodland gardens and mixed with silver, gold or green-leaved plants.
