‘Bleeding Hearts’ is a particularly interesting false sunflower because it combines dark green to purplish foliage with flowers that begin deep orange-red and mature toward golden orange. The contrast gives the plant a much richer appearance than the ordinary yellow-flowered forms of Heliopsis. It forms a substantial upright clump and produces flowers continuously through much of midsummer and into fall, often until the first frost. It is a strong pollinator plant and is well suited to the middle or back of a sunny perennial border, where its height gives it presence without becoming a huge, floppy plant. It tolerates some drought once established.
