‘Autumn Gold’ is a compact perennial sunflower that gives you an enormous amount of fall color from a surprisingly small plant. During spring and summer it forms a dense mound of narrow, dark green foliage that can almost look like a small shrub. Then, beginning in late summer and continuing through fall, the plant becomes covered with bright golden-yellow sunflower-like flowers with dark centers. The flowers are especially valuable for extending color into September, October and sometimes toward November or hard frost. It is drought tolerant once established and attracts bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife. Unlike many tall perennial sunflowers, this selection remains compact enough that it generally does not need staking.
