Fern ‘Godzilla’ Giant Japanese Painted Fern
Athyrium ‘Godzilla’ is a spectacular giant Japanese painted fern prized for its enormous, finely divided fronds and dramatic presence in the shade garden. It develops a broad, spreading clump that can become quite impressive with age, making it an excellent choice for filling larger areas beneath trees or among other woodland plants. The foliage combines silvery-green tones with darker veins and stems, giving the plant considerably more visual interest than an ordinary green fern. It does not depend on flowers for its appeal; instead, its architectural foliage provides texture and contrast from spring through fall. It is particularly effective planted with hostas, heucheras, woodland grasses, Solomon’s seal, and other shade-loving perennials.
Height: 3–4 ft
Width: 3–5 ft
Flower time: None; grown for foliage
Sun/Shade: Part shade to full shade
