Astilbe ‘Dark Side of the Moon’
One of the most dramatic astilbes available, combining near-black/chocolate-purple foliage with vivid rosy-purple flower plumes. New foliage emerges yellow-green with a dark margin before becoming much darker as it matures.
Size: 20–22 in. tall × 24–28 in. wide. Flower stalks can reach approximately 28–34 in.
Bloom time: July–August / late summer.
Flower color: Rosy purple / raspberry-purple.
Foliage: Deep chocolate-burgundy to near-black.
Light: Full sun to shade, provided adequate moisture is available.
Best features: Exceptional dark foliage, bright purple flower plumes and strong shade-garden impact.
It is particularly effective when planted beside chartreuse or golden foliage, where the dark leaves create dramatic contrast.
