Acer palmatum ‘Twombly’s Red Sentinel’ Japanese Maple
One of the most useful Japanese maples for a narrow planting space. It grows upright and columnar rather than spreading widely. Leaves emerge bright red, deepen to purple-red/burgundy through summer, and become scarlet in fall.
Size: approximately 10–15 ft. tall × 6–8 ft. wide. Though they grow slowly and do not reach max height in our climate. Can be pruned to maintain smaller size.
Bloom time: spring.
Flowers: Tiny, inconspicuous maple flowers.
Foliage: Burgundy-red/purple-red.
Fall color: Brilliant scarlet red.
Best feature: Tall, narrow form—excellent beside a house, walkway, driveway, or in a small garden.
